US National Women’s Law Center

The National Women’s Law Center fights for gender justice — in the courts, in public policy, and in our society — working across the issues that are central to the lives of women and girls. Because of the Center’s work, a woman in an office building or an Army tank has more protection against discrimination and more opportunity than ever before. A high school or college student has many more chances to play sports and reap the benefits. A family has better access to affordable health coverage. And an older woman is more likely to have economic security in her retirement.

State wage gaps calculated by National Women’s Law Center (NWLC) are based on 2014-2018 American Community Survey Five-Year Estimates (http://www.census.gov/acs/www/). National wage gap calculated by NWLC is based on the 2018 American Community Survey (http://www.census.gov/acs/www/). “What a woman makes for every dollar a man makes” is the ratio of women’s and men’s median earnings for full time, year round workers. Earnings are in 2018 dollars. The “wage gap” is the additional money a woman would have to make for every dollar made by a man in order to have equal annual earnings. Ranks based on unrounded data. People in both surveys self-identified as either male or female. NHOPI women are those who self-identified in the survey as Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander. White, non-Hispanic men refer to those who have self-identified as white but who are not of Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin.
