The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is an indicator used to estimate, between two given periods, the change in the general price level of goods and services offered to consumers in the given territory. It is a synthetic measure of constant quality price developments. It can be used primarily as a measure of inflation or as a measure of price stability. It is also used for volume-price sharing of household consumption in national accounts. In the end it can be used for the indexation of contracts (wages, rent, payment of social security, ...) and the effects thereof. The current CPI is calculated on the basis of the prices of several products, measured in several types of outlets (markets, stores, businesses and public and private services, shops, households and other retail outlets).
