Bank of Tanzania

The Bank of Tanzania is the Central Bank of the United Republic of Tanzania established by the Bank of Tanzania Act of 1965, It became operational on 14th June 1966. Various amendments to the Bank of Tanzania Act have been made leading to the Bank of Tanzania Act of 1978 and the Bank of Tanzania Act of 1995. Presently, the Bank of Tanzania operates under the Bank of Tanzania Act, 2006.

      The current account deficit widened to USD 5,296.2 million in the year ending April 2023, from USD 2,985.3 million in the year ending April 2022, explained by high import bill.  The stock of foreign exchange reserves declined to USD 4,881.2 million at the end of April 2023, from USD 5,461.4 million in the similar period in 2022. Exports of goods and services amounted to USD 12,440.8 million in the year to April 2023, up from USD 10,607.3 million in the previous year, mostly driven by non-traditional goods exports and services receipts.

      Prices of most commodities eased during December 2022, largely explained by subdued demand. For instance, crude oil prices declined to an average of USD 78.07 per barrel during the month from USD 87.38 per barrel in the previous month. Similarly, wheat and palm oil prices fell during the month. Likewise, prices of traditional exports such as cotton, coffee, tobacco, and tea declined slightly compared with the preceding month.
