While the Maldives may be best known worldwide as a picturesque vacation destination, on 4 November President Abdullah Yameen declared a 30-day state of emergency, an order he swiftly revoked less than a week later following widespread international condemnation and concerns about its strong impact on the country's tourism industry. An explosion on the president's boat in late September is being linked to the decision to impose a state of emergency as well as to the dismissal or arrest of high-level cabinet members and officials, including Vice President Ahmed Adeeb.

In light of the recent events, we have prepared a brief overview of the Maldives' economic performance along with a short series of visualizations to examine the extent to which the country is dependent on tourism.
