Global COVID-19 Cases Nearing 8M as Cases Spike in Latin America, India

(14 June 2020)Cases of COVID-19 globally are closing in on 8 million with an uptick reported out of Latin America, led by Brazil, as well as India, indicating that the global pandemic is far from over. One quarter of cases worldwide—more than 2 million infections—are in the United States, although the fastest growing outbreak is in Brazil, which accounts around 11 percent of total cases. India and Russia account for roughly 4 percent and 7 percent, respectively. Latin American countries like Peru (2.9%), Mexico (1.8%), and Chile (2.2%) are reporting a rising number of confirmed cases as well. During the last week, India—the world’s most populous country—has reported an exponential increase in new cases at an average of roughly 11,000 per day. India now joins the United States, Russia, and Brazil in terms of total confirmed COVID-19 infections. India opened the economy on 8 June despite no signs that the infection curve was flattening.  Note: Referenced figures are as of 14 June 2020.

Brazil: Latest GDP Figures Point to Recession

(10 June 2020)  Brazil’s economy contracted by 1.54 percent QoQ during Q1 2020, signaling that the economy is moving toward recession amidst a rising number of COVID-19 cases, a weak labor market, and a domestic political crisis. Brasilia’s new fiscal stimulus package, including emergency support in response to COVID-19, has further strained public finances that were already under pressure before the pandemic broke out.A closer look at the components of GDP indicates that the overall economic contraction was largely driven by reduced household consumption along with slower growth of already low levels of government expenditures. In positive news, investment, as reflected by gross fixed capital formation, grew 3.1 percent QoQ in the first quarter, up from 2.7 percent in Q4 2019. Imports also grew during the first quarter after contracting in the final quarter or 2019.

Brazil Population

Brazil is the largest country in South America and Latin America, and the fifth-largest country in the world in terms of population. According to the latest census figures, the total population estimate for 2015 is 207.8 million people that accounts for 2.83% of the total world population. It means that one person out of every 35 people on the planet can be a resident of Brazil. Looking back, in the year of 1960, Brazil had a population of 72.5 million people. The main factor behind the rapid population growth since 1960 is immigration both from Europe and Africa, as well as other points of the world. Current high population growth is explained by the high level (more than half of Brazil population) of young people under the age of 20 years.  Concerning future population projections, Brazil is expected to continue rising. Population division of the UN expects the Brazil population to peak at 238 million people in 2050 and then to decrease to 200 million people by 2100. As for the population of Brazilian cities, it is booming every year. For example, more than ninety percent of its population is homed in one of the largest cities in state Sao Paulo. This is mainly due to the migration of the rural population and heavily fraught with problems in the social sphere. This applies to both education, health, and the housing problem, which now do not meet the needs of society. Brazil has exceptionally low population density. Almost all of the its population (about 90%) is concentrated in 3 key areas of the country: the Northeast, Southeast and South, while the vast territory of the North and the Center-West, is 2/3 of the country's territory, home to only 9% of Brazilians. The highest degree of concentration of population is observed on the Atlantic coast, occupying only about 7% of the country and to focus about 50% of the population. The ethnic and racial composition of the population is very complex because the Brazilian ethnic group was formed under the influence of mass migration from Europe and Africa. Indigenous people (Indians) are not more than 10% of the population. They live mainly in the interior forest areas of the country. The main part of the population is the Brazilians, they are ethnicity featuring a large racial diversity: white, black, brown and yellow. Portuguese culture and language, the basis of mixed Brazilian culture, have incorporated many elements of African and Native American cultures.China PopulationIndia PopulationUSA PopulationIndonesia PopulationBrazil Population World PopulationPakistan PopulationNigeria PopulationBangladesh PopulationRussia PopulationJapan Population World Population Ranking

Zika Outbreak in Brazil

Outbreaks of the Zika virus have been recorded through history in Africa, the Americas, Asia and the Pacific, with Brazil most recently making headlines for an outbreak that started in 2015 and continues today. The virus that causes Zika disease is carried by mosquitoes of the genus Aedes and was first discovered in Uganda in 1947 by monitoring the macaque yellow fever. The virus reemerged in 1952, when it was detected in humans in Uganda and the United Republic of Tanzania. Symptoms of the disease caused by the Zika virus may include a slight increase in temperature, skin rashes, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain, general malaise or a headache, which typically persist for 2 to 7 days. The virus of Zika can be transmitted sexually. Infection of Zika virus is associated with the unfavorable development of pregnancy and adverse effects on the fetus. The scientific community came to a consensus that the virus of Zika causes microcephaly and Guillain-Barre syndrome. There are other connections with neurological complications which are also being studied. The spread of the Zika virus will have long-term health-related consequences for families and communities, as well as for countries whose health systems will have the task for years to assist children born with such complications. Expanding the capacity of health systems in affected countries to address these ongoing challenges is one of the main elements of the World Health Organization's Strategic Response Plan.
