Metainformation:Last modified: new data (2018) Survey reference day: Start of January Regionalisation: Cantons / 1.1.1997 Survey: Farm Structure Survey STRUSymbols used: ' ... ' : Number unknown because not (yet) surveyed or not (yet) calculated '( )' : Not available because not sufficiently statistically reliableNotes Level 1: Degree of detail of the classification of the farms' utilised agricultural areas and animals (most aggregated level). The data for the years 1975, 1980, 1985 and 1990 differ from those in the print publications. The data currently published for these years have been adapted to the definition of an agricultural holding that has been valid since 1996.Agricultural holding: An agricultural business that - carries out crop production and/or livestock farming throughout the entire year; - includes one or more production plants; - is autonomous legally, economically, organisationally and financially and independent from other farms; - has its own operating result; - is farmed throughout the entire year An agricultural holding complies with the following minimum standards: - 1 ha utilised agricultural area (UAA) or - 30 ares of special crops or - 10 ares of protected crops or - 8 sows or - 80 fattening pigs or - 80 fattening pig places or - 300 poultry unitsStatistical unit: The statistical unit is the agricultural holding (see definition). The areas, livestock and employees published here are those from agricultural holdings. Therefore, it is possible that the figures may be lower than the Swiss totals, because these do not include units that are not considered to be agricultural holdings; this is particularly relevant for horse and bee populations.CantonThe canton in which the business is locally registered. A business can only be registered in one canton even if the areas are partly situated in another canton. It is therefore possible that a canton registers crops that are not situated in the canton territory such as vineyards, tobacco, etc.; it may also be possible that the UAA shown for a canton does not correspond to its actual effective area.Area of agricultural productionIn order to take greater account of the different agricultural production conditions in relation to the Confederation's support measures, Switzerland's agricultural area is divided into several zones. The most important delimitation criteria are climate, transport situation, topography of the land, altitude and exposure. Observation unitFamily employeesThis category includes the farm manager, his/her immediate family, i.e. father, mother, brothers, sisters and children aged 15 and over who work on the farm.Farmholding formFull-time farmFarm with a work volume of at least 1500 hours/year (pursuant to ART norms) and on which the farm manager is employed with a work-time percentage of at least 50%.

Only units which have a sufficiently large forest area, rights of disposal to the area and consolidated accounting are considered to be forest enterprises. The minimum surface area for a forest enterprise is defined differently depending on the forest area in which it is located: - Jura 200 ha - Central Plain 150 ha - Prealps 250 ha - Alps/Southern Alps 500 haComment This cube continues the data from the 2004-2014 cube with a new statistical population. For this flow, data in products categories do not exist.Imports, exports and their aggregates Original data are from the Swiss trade statistics established by the Swiss Customs Administration. This involves: - Trade statistics are classified by product type (car, hat ...) while material flow accounts are based on a classification by material types (biomass, metal ...). To switch from one classification to the other, products are classified following their main material. Non-classifiable products are put in the category “Other products”. This involves that data quality is lower for the finer subcategories. - Imports and exports of waste cannot be extracted from the trade statistics before 2002.More information about MFA (in German): Environmental accountsMaterial categories4.02.03 Fuels bunkered 1)= (Imports: by resident units abroad); (Exports: by non-resident units domestically)4.02.03.02 Fuel for water transport 2)Marine transport not included

DPO follows the residence principle: it includes emissions abroad of resident units (for example: Airline companies of Switzerland) and excludes emissions in Switzerland of non-resident units (for example: foreign heavy goods vehicles). Since the 2019 data update and in order to comply with international standards, the quantities of waste disposal to landfills have been excluded from emissions to nature. Landfills are thus considered as part of the infrastructure of the society.More information about EW-MFA: Environmental accounts

Metainformation:Last update : new data (year 2018), revised values (1990-2017). Status: March 2019 Survey: Environmental accounts (CENV) - Physical accountsFigures from 2018 are estimates. This interactive table presents the complete Material flow accounts (MFA) at the highest aggregation level (for disaggregated data by material type see the two other MFA interactive tables). The flows presented in this interactive table are: - Domestic extraction used DEU: DEU measures the flows of materials from the Swiss environment and that physically enter the economy. - Unused domestic extraction UDE: includes all the materials extracted in Switzerland but not used in the national economy. - Imports: all raw materials or manufactured products, which enter in Switzerland from abroad and all materials consumed abroad by Swiss resident units (residence principle). - Imports in raw material equivalents: Imports converted in the mass of all materials used during the production processes and transport of goods and services until they cross the border. The indicators in raw material equivalents are the result of modelling and involve a higher level of uncertainty than the direct flow indicators. They should therefore be considered as estimates. - Exports: all raw materials or manufactured products that leave Switzerland and all materials consumed in Switzerland by non-resident units (residence principle). - Exports in raw material equivalents: Exports converted in the mass of all materials used during the production processes and transport of goods and services until they cross the border. The indicators in raw material equivalents are the result of modelling and involve a higher level of uncertainty than the direct flow indicators. They should therefore be considered as estimates. - Domestic processed output DPO: DPO measures the total weight of materials from domestic extraction and imports that are released to the environment after having been used by the national economy. DPO follows the residence principle: it includes emissions abroad from resident units (for example: Airline companies of Switzerland) and excludes emissions in Switzerland from non-resident units (for example: foreign heavy goods vehicles). Since the 2019 data update and in order to comply with international standards, the quantities of waste disposal to landfills have been excluded from emissions to nature. Landfills are thus considered as part of the infrastructure of the society. - Net additions to stock NAS: NAS reflect the physical growth of the economy (expansion of the stock of materials in building, infrastructures and durable goods). - Balancing items: To compile a full mass balance, quantities are corrected with balancing items both on the input and output sides. These items include for example the oxygen used during the combustion process and the water vapor emitted through human and livestock respiration. By taking into account such processes, the balancing items allow calculating the correct net additions to stock NAS (see above). The indicators presented in this interactive table are: - DMC (Domestic Material Consumption) = DEU + Imports - Exports - DMI (Direct Material Input) = DEU + Imports - RMC (Raw Material Consumption) = Domestic extraction used + Imports in raw material equivalents - Exports in raw material equivalents - RMI (Raw Material Input) = Domestic extraction used + Imports in raw material equivalents - PTB (Physical Trade Balance) = Exports - Imports - NAS (Net Additions to Stock) = DEU + Imports + Balancing items : Input side - Exports - DPO - Balancing items : Output sideMore information about MFA Environmental accounting - Material flowsUnit of measureTons per capitaFigures are divided by the resident population on the 31st December.CHF per kgGross domestic product GDP in chain-linked volumes to reference year 2010 is used in the calculations.Kg per CHFGross domestic product GDP in chain-linked volumes to reference year 2010 is used in the calculations.

Definitions:By definition, the FSO's road vehicle stock includes all civilian vehicles registered on 30 September belonging to owners who were resident in Switzerland on the day of reference. The commune of residence is defined by the postal code and postal locality in the owner's address. Analysis of these addresses has recently been improved, resulting in a backdated correction of fleet data from the years 2005 and 2006. Discrepancies in the stock by canton are roughly under 2% or in most cases less than one in a thousand.Canton The canton is defined by the owner's address and not by the registration plate.

Only units which have a sufficiently large forest area, rights of disposal to the area and consolidated accounting are considered to be forest enterprises. The minimum surface area for a forest enterprise is defined differently depending on the forest area in which it is located: - Jura 200 ha - Central Plain 150 ha - Prealps 250 ha - Alps/Southern Alps 500 haComments This cube continues the data from the 2004-2014 cube with a new statistical population. Both cubes have only limited comparability.Data regarding to forest surface can lightly differ to the surface from “Forest area in Switzerland, in ha” because of different methods for calculation.
