      Each federal fiscal year begins October 1 and ends September 30. Borrowers are not expected to make payments during graceRepayment:Includes loans that are in an active repayment statusDeferment:Includes loans in which payments have been postponed as a result of certain circumstances such as returning to school, military service, or economic hardshipForbearance:Includes loans in which payments have been temporary suspended or reduced as a result of certain types of financial hardshipsCumulative in Default:Includes loans that are more than 360 days delinquentOther:Includes loans that are in non-defaulted bankruptcy and in a disability statusDollars Outstanding:Includes the outstanding principal and interest balance of loans in the specified statusRecipients:Includes the number of recipients in the specified loan status. The recipient is the student that benefits from the federal student loan. In most cases, the recipient is the borrower, but in parent PLUS loans, the parent is the borrower and their child is the recipient

      This dataset provides information about the federal student loan portfolio.The office of Federal Student Aid is responsible for directly managing or overseeing an outstanding federal student loan portfolio comprised of billions of dollars in Title IV loans and representing millions of borrowers. This federal student loan portfolio includes Direct Loans, Federal Family Education Loans (FFEL), and Perkins Loans with outstanding balances. Includes Direct Loan, Federal Family Education Loan, and Perkins Loan borrowers in an Open loan status, Includes Direct Loan, Federal Family Education Loan, Recipient counts are based at the loan level. If a recipient received loans from more than one school type, they are counted in each applicable school type.
