Both ethanol and biodiesel are classified under the HS-6 digit categories that also contain other products. Biodiesel is an industrial product (as it is produced through a chemical process called transesterification) and classified under HS code 382490 - products, preparations and residual products of the chemical or allied industries not elsewhere specified. Ethanol is classified as an agriculture product under HS code 2207, which covers un-denatured (HS 2207 10) and denatured alcohol (HS 2207 20).

Annual data on quantities for crude oil, oil products, natural gas and manufactures gases, electricity and derived heat, solid fossil fuels,  renewables and wastes covering the full spectrum of the energy sector from supply through transformation to final energy consumption by sector and fuel type. Also, annual imports and exports data of various energy carriers by country of origin and destination, as well as infrastructure information. Annual data collection cover in principle the EU Member States, EFTA, EU candidate countries, and potential candidate countries. Time series starts mostly in year 1990. All data are presented in the form of energy balances.

This dataset covers the indicator for monitoring progress towards renewable energy targets of the Europe 2020 strategy implemented by Directive 2009/28/EC on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources. The annual data collection covers in principle the 28 Member States of the European Union. Time series starts in the year 2004. The calculation is based on data collected in the framework of Regulation (EC) No 1099/2008 on energy statistics and complemented by specific supplementary data transmitted by national administrations to Eurostat. In some countries the statistical systems are not yet fully developed to meet all requirements of Directive 2009/28/EC, in particular with respect to ambient heat captured from the environment by heat pumps. This is indicator is a Sustainable Development Goal (SDG). It has been chosen for the assessment of the progress towards the objectives and targets of the EU Sustainable Development Strategy. The data collection covers the full spectrum of the 28 Member States of the European Union.  The share of energy from renewable sources is calculated for four indicators: Transport (RES-T)Heating and Cooling (RES-H&C)Electricity (RES-E)Overall RES share (RES) More details are available in the SHARES tool manual. In addition, more information (like detailed calculations used to obtain the results) are available in the Excel and zip file in the SHARES section.

The data on the share of renewable energy jobs of total employment was calculated on the basis of two datasets. The first one, the 'Renewable Energy Employment by Country' from the International Renewable Energy Agency, contains data on the number of renewable energy jobs by country. The second dataset contains data on the total number of working people by country from the Conference Board's 'Total Economy Database: Output, Labor, and Labor Productivity' dataset.

Data on solar collectors surface cover solar thermal energy (not solar photovoltaic). The data are displayed in the database in thousand square meters. Data on solar collectors surface are collected by standard questionnaires according to Annex B of the Regulation (EC) No 1099/2008 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 22 October 2008 on energy statistics
