Tourism Industry COVID Risk Scoreboard: Travel & Tourism Held Hostage by Coronavirus

(2 July 2021) Though travel and tourism stocks recovered to a pre-crisis level by the end of 2020, financial statement data shows that the COVID-19 pandemic continues to have a strong negative impact on the revenues of companies in the tourism industry. In Q1 2021, sales of Booking Holdings Inc., Expedia Inc. and TripAdvisor Inc. were down 60-65% compared to the same quarter a year ago. This and other data on the pandemic points to a subdued and protracted recovery for the tourism sector. The shape of that recovery will depend largely on what happens with COVID-19. In this dashboard we have put together pandemic-related statistics for 48 countries that account for more than 70% of world tourism arrivals and departures as a resource to help users to estimate the impact of COVID-19 on international tourism flows. The fourth global wave of the pandemic ended in June of 2021, but as the Delta variant of virus spreads around the glob the number of new COVID-19 cases recently began to rise again in Europe, North America and Africa. Lack of effective political leadership has hampered efforts to halt the pandemic in Latin America. As of June 29, the number of new COVID-19 cases was higher than it had been a week earlier in 28 out of the 48 countries covered in this dashboard. The upsurges in COVID-19 cases in Dec. 2020 through Jan. 2021 and the spring of 2021 correlated with a downturn in travel and tourism stocks. The stringency of international travel restrictions designed to combat the spread of disease remains at a high level in 36 out of the 48 countries. In six countries borders are closed for international travel, and 30 countries have bans on travel to/from high-risk regions. Other countries put arrivals from high-risk regions in quarantine or use screening.Developed countries are significantly ahead of the developing world in vaccination progress. Nevertheless, only few developed countries are close to reaching herd immunity (meaning 70% of population has been vaccinated or developed antibodies). In 16 out of the 48 countries, the number of vaccinations per hundred population is still lower than 40 — the level that seems to be required to subdue the spread of the pandemic to less than 100 new daily cases per million population per day.

International Tourism in 2020: Thirty Winners and Seventy Losers

(24 June 2020) While the worst economic expectations for 2020 did not materialize, the travel and tourism industry is not an object of envy with respect to the COVID-19 pandemic. A global lockdown in 2020 in the first wave of pandemic and long-term border closures following the upsurge in new COVID-19 outbreaks resulted in a 65% decline in world exports of travel services in 2020 compared to the previous year. Cross-country comparison based on the IMF's balance of payments data shows that the trends in exports of travel services, such as booking services, hotel accommodation, and financial and restaurant services used by travelers, were decisive in shaping countries' net trade in services in 2020.According to the aggregated balance of payments data collected by the IMF, world exports of tourism services declined by $1 trillion last year,  which accounted for 60% of $1.6 trillion drop in total world services exports. Not all countries were hit equally by the decline in the world travel and tourism industry. From the 106-country data sample for which IMF published data on trade in services by category in 2020, thirty-three countries that reduced their net imports of travel services (the purchase of travel services from other countries) gained from the global travel and tourism industry collapse: lower imports, in national accounts methodology calculations, means higher GDP growth. The economies of China, Germany, Russia, the UK, and Australia gained the most, in absolute terms, by the 2020 tourism crisis. For seventy-three countries in the sample, the global tourism slowdown had a negative impact on the national economy.  Spain and Thailand suffered the most in absolute terms, losing around $40 billions in net exports of travel services. In relative terms, the decline in travel services imports in 2020 added more than 1% to GDP for seven countries, including Iraq and Norway, whose GDPs increased by more than 2% due to the 2020 tourism industry crisis. Small island countries lost the most in relative terms: the decline in the net trade in tourism services in 2020 cost Aruba 39% of GDP, and Seychelles and the Bahamas lost 29% and 26% of GDP, respectively. The 106 cross-country data panel shows a strong direct correlation between change in net trade in travel services and change in total net trade in services. Data shows that per $1 decline/increase in net trade in travel services, total net trade in services on average declined/grew by $1.1.

Hawaii: Tourism Essentially Zero Under COVID-19, but Recovery Path Evident //knoema.es/hvlgkvd/hawaii-tourism-essentially-zero-under-covid-19-but-recovery-path-evident 2021-05-17T14:02:39Z Alex Kulikov knoema.es://knoema.es/user/1847910
Hawaii: Tourism Essentially Zero Under COVID-19, but Recovery Path Evident

Hawaii's tourism industry has ground to a halt under COVID-19, with almost all trans-Pacific flights to Hawaii canceled, the US CDC "no sail order" on all cruise ships extended through the end of July, and the state implementing strict measures to lockdown the islands. Only 4,564 tourists visited Hawaii by air in April compared to a combined total of roughly 850,000 by air and cruise in April 2019. This dropoff corresponds to a 98.2 percent decrease in total visitor days year-on-year, a figure that essentially repeats nearly any way you slice it. For example, arrivals from Japan decreased by 99.5 percent, from other Asian countries, 99.4 percent, and so on. While the abrupt, multi-month suspension of nearly all tourism has created economic stress, the data also illuminates the potential resiliency of this critical industry. The Coincident Economic Activity Index developed by the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia—combining four state-level indicators to summarize current economic conditions in a single statistic—shows a nearly 55% decrease in economic activity in Hawaii between January and May with a slight recovery in June.Buried in the tourism statistics, the long-term nature of repeat tourists, spending a month or more at a time in the island paradise, speaks to the effective strategy of the real estate and time share industries that draw in large investment and tourism dollars. These visitors will be back as travel and the state reopens. In all likelihood, flash deals will also draw back first-timers, eager to reclaim lost vacation opportunities during COVID as well. One question in this outlook, however, for Hawaii and other similar tourist destinations globally is how much of the support services and small businesses will withstand the COVID-period economic conditions to cater to tourists (and claim their dollars) when they do return?

Yuvoh Analytics | Airbnb Property Prices and Domestic Tourism in Europe

(10 December 2020) In September, Iceland, Norway, and Denmark had the highest average room prices on Airbnb among European countries, according to Yuvoh analytics. These three countries also had relatively low numbers of active COVID-19 cases per million population as of September and saw significant improvements in domestic tourist arrivals compared to the previous year. Germany, Italy, and Spain outperformed the pricier Airbnb locations in terms of the total number of domestic tourists, probably aided by their strong country 'brand' rating, published by Bloom Consulting, analyzing the brand performance of 193 countries and territories worldwide. That said, these countries have not yet fully recovered from COVID-19 and reported lower overall tourist arrivals compared to the same period of 2019.  Eastern-European countries, including Bulgaria, Slovakia, Hungary, and Latvia had the lowest average price tag on Airbnb in September. Domestic tourism in these countries returned to pre-COVID levels by the end of summer due to low numbers of active COVID-19 cases.

Tourism

Along with its cultural, leisure and recreational functions tourism contributes significantly (both directly and indirectly) to the world's economy and employment. It contributes to GDP even more than the automotive industry in all the regions throughout the globe: three times as much in Americas and two times as much in Europe, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council's 2017 research. In many countries tourism is the key source of jobs for their population. Thus, in Macau, one of the two Special Administrative Regions of the People's Republic of China, a half of population is employed in the travel and tourism sphere. The Burden of COVID-19 on the Tourism Industry

The travel industry has been hit hard and fast as countries continue rolling out increasingly restrictive and comprehensive restrictions on international passenger traffic under response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Almost 130 million people employed in the tourism industry globally are at risk of job loss or a significant decrease in personal income. These workers represent about 4% of employment globally.World GDP may lose from 3.3% to 10.5% because of the collapse of the tourism industry.

I love to Explore places.. not only me.. like me there are many people are spending the time in travelling for making memories...   Travel & Tourism is a truly global economic activity – one which takes place in destinations across the world, from leading capital cities and smaller towns and villages in rural and coastal areas, to some of the remotest points on the planet. It is one of the world’s largest industries, or economic sectors, contributing trillions of dollars annually to the global economy, creating jobs and wealth, generating exports, boosting taxes and stimulating capital investment

Global Travel & Tourism Industry Statistics

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) is a forum for the travel and tourism industry - one of the world’s largest economic sectors, contributing trillions of dollars annually to the global economy, creating jobs and wealth, generating exports, boosting taxes and stimulating capital investment. WTCC is made up of members from the global business community and works with governments to raise awareness about the travel and tourism industry. It is known for being the only forum to represent the private sector in all parts of the industry worldwide. Its activities include research on the economic and social impact of the industry and its organisation of global and regional summits focused on issues and developments relevant to the tourism. The WTTC performs and publishes research in conjunction with Oxford Economics on the economic and social impact of the travel and tourism industry. The foundation of the WTTC’s research activity is a set of annually produced Travel & Tourism Economic Impact Reports. These include a global report as well as 24 regional and 184 country reports. The reports calculate the economic impact of the industry including the direct and total GDP impacts, direct and indirect employment, investment, and exports. Using models based on Tourism Satellite Accounting, the Council also reports the forecasts for these impacts.  In this page you can explore the WTCC data with the Knoema's interactive visual gadgets. World's Most Visited Cities

In 2016, Germany, Thailand, and Hong Kong were the top destinations for international travelers while China and the United States accounted for roughly one-third of total tourism expenditures worldwide, according to the World Tourism Organization. But, as people typically visit specific cities within a country, and not the entire country, it is far more interesting to examine city-level tourism statistics. The Global Destination Cities Index, which includes city-level data on the number of overnight international visitors and their spending, reveals that Bangkok attracted the most visitors in 2016, with nearly 21.5 million visitors recorded, followed by London with roughly 20 million visitors, and Paris at 18.3 million. Despite Germany's top rank globally, no German city reached the top 10 for international visitors in 2016.Dubai led globally based on total expenditures of international visitors in 2016, with visitors spending more than $30 billion in the city. Other top-spend cities included London, New York, Paris, and Singapore. In terms of growth, Casablanca, Abu Dhabi, Osaka, Tokyo, and Colombo attracted the most new visitors, a persistent trend for Osaka, which has been among the top 5 cities every year since 2012. There is no overlap between these cities and those with the highest business tourism levels, however; then, Bucharest, Jakarta, and Shanghai jump to the top of the ranking.

Maldives' Economic Performance and Heavy Reliance on Tourism Industry

While the Maldives may be best known worldwide as a picturesque vacation destination, on 4 November President Abdullah Yameen declared a 30-day state of emergency, an order he swiftly revoked less than a week later following widespread international condemnation and concerns about its strong impact on the country's tourism industry. An explosion on the president's boat in late September is being linked to the decision to impose a state of emergency as well as to the dismissal or arrest of high-level cabinet members and officials, including Vice President Ahmed Adeeb.   In light of the recent events, we have prepared a brief overview of the Maldives' economic performance along with a short series of visualizations to examine the extent to which the country is dependent on tourism.
