The Burden of COVID-19 on the Tourism Industry

The travel industry has been hit hard and fast as countries continue rolling out increasingly restrictive and comprehensive restrictions on international passenger traffic under response to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

  • Almost 130 million people employed in the tourism industry globally are at risk of job loss or a significant decrease in personal income. These workers represent about 4% of employment globally.
  • World GDP may lose from 3.3% to 10.5% because of the collapse of the tourism industry.
